Like many of you, I too had problems finding "good for you cosmetics".
(To name only a few examples: Parabens commonly used in cosmetics have not been officially classified as harmful to human health however Parabens are present in breast tumor cells. Phthalates are widely used by the cosmetic industry (listed as dialkyl or alkyl aryl esters of 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid). Until recently, only exposure to high levels of Phthalate was considered a health risk. Latest research suggests that exposure to very low levels of Phthalates may cause allergies, have a negative effect on male fetus genitals’ development; can adversely affect the male brain and may cause DNA damage of sperm. Most antiperspirants contain an aluminum compound (most commonly, aluminum chloride, AlCl3). Aluminum poses many health risks but aluminum salt - like this used in deodorants - may act as a neurotoxin. It is being debated also whether or not, aluminum compounds used in antiperspirants - which after all, are applied under the arm, right over lymphatic nodes - increase the risk of breast cancer.)
Still, like all of you, I too believed that only God (or a large industry) can manufacture cosmetics so it took a long time before I decided to take matters in my own hands. I begun developing skin care products (moisturizers, creams and lotions), personal care products (like antiperspirants and toothpaste) as well as cosmetics (including foundation, lip gloss and mascara!) for my own use.
Pretty soon, my allergies and sensitivities became a thing of the past. I looked forward to my beauty routine again and - lo and behold - I begun seeing the results I ALWAYS wished for. (Let's be honest, I spent a fortune - in years past - paying for promises made by conventional cosmetics' manufacturers which - at least for me - never came true.) In no time, I've had a number of volunteers and fans eager to try and use my "good for you cosmetics". Soon I learned that no woman buys conventional skin care or cosmetics because she's not aware of their often controversial ingredients but because conventional products are easy to find and buy. However given a choice between "good for you cosmetics" and the conventional ones, most women prefer the natural and healthy cosmetics. All of my female friends and fans are concerned with their health and the environment they'll leave for their children.
Now, if you consider that:
taking care of your skin, from skin care to cosmetics, takes on even more importance. Anything you put on your skin ought to serve a purpose: nourish, renew, protect or beautify NATURALLY and SAFELY. I use high quality, natural oils that nourish, moisturize, protect and rejuvenate skin; vitamins and minerals; natural fruit or vegetable colorants and flavors, I use scents sparingly and rely mostly on natural scents of the exquisite ingredients (and occasionally, natural essential oils); to extend the shelf life of my products I use either vitamins or fruit extracts.
Natural, good for you cosmetics are not replicas of the conventional ones. Their shelf life is shorter; in hot temperatures (some of them) may require occasional stirring to maintain their original texture and / or refrigeration; they don't have the powerful scents of their chemicals-laden conventional counterparts. But the minor (and let's face it, insignificant) differences aside, do long shelf life, texture and overpowering scent justify risking our health?... That's a question you SHOULD ask yourself because most of the unsavory chemicals used in self care, skin care and cosmetics are added for these three reasons! Look at it this way: Even though we all know that fresh flowers have a limited lifespan and don't last as long as the artificial ones, given a choice between fresh and artificial flowers EVERY woman prefers her flowers fresh. Similarly with food: you could be eating fast food every day and accept being overweight, sickly, having high blood pressure; high cholesterol level along with the risk of developing diabetes and colon cancer OR eat whole, fresh foods including plenty of fruit and veggies; be slim; fit and healthy. We all prefer the latter.
Natural, fresh flowers, foods and... cosmetics are perishable and have to be treated / stored accordingly.
My products really are NATURAL and don't have the preservatives that make conventional cosmetics last "forever". Just like fresh flowers and foods that are not expected to last indefinitely and require special care or storage, so do natural, Good For You Cosmetics. The shelf life of each product is specified on the product's page. Some items require refrigeration. Just like fresh flowers and whole foods with a shorter shelf life are a choice so are natural, Good For You Cosmetics: a trade-off for better health and natural beauty.....
